Rare & Outstanding 19th Century Chinese Lacquer Box / Chest for Jewelry & Valuables with Drawer & Key, Circa 1850. Being offered is a rare and lovely 19th Century Chinese lacquered wood box / chest made to store and keep jewelry and valuables.
The chest is handsomely sculpted on the sides, corners, top etc. And is a lovely item to look at when displayed on a side table, cabinet or amongst your collection.
The surfaces are decorated with charming hand painted courtyard scenes of scholars, birds, flowers, fruits, immortal symbols, background motifs, etc. The decorations are meticulously painted in gold and a rosier gold paint against a dark reddish brown background and on a handsomely shaped box with lovely lid. The box is fitted with four carved, gold gilded feet.
The carving appear to be either heads of dragons or bats. Please see photographs and decide for yourself! The original key is still in place. The key is stamped around the top with the words "SECURE LEVER". Measurements : The box measures 6 inches (15cm) in height x 9 1/2 inches (24cm) in length x 7 inches (12.5cm) deep.
All measurements are approximate, but close. Condition : This box / chest has survived well for its age with only minor cracks, wear to decoration, breaks on carving, and light bumps! The hinge and lid closes soundly. The drawer opens and closes properly. The key works to lock both lid and drawer, but can be very stubborn at times!
The drawer key hole plate is loose. There are cracks on the body of the box around the drawer and also on the right side of the box. The drawer has both front ends with small damages. The rear foot has some damage to the carving.
