Chinese Late Qing 1890-1910 Wood/Brass Finials/Carved Soapstone Jewelry Box
One of the most intricately decorated, beautiful and quality small jewelry boxes I have seen. And it is decorated in classic ornate Qing style. The box is made of hand planed and carved thick wood panels and finished in clear lacquer. The box is joined with classic dovetailed joints.

All of the edges and corner are finished with hand pounded and hand incised designs. The designs include all forms of stylized bat and flower designs. Some of the most intricate designs I have seen on a jewelry box. The box sides are decorated with four oval inset soapstone three dimensionally carved in flower designs pieces. The top doors have rectangular insets carved in three dimensional flowering pots.

The bottom drawer has oval insets carved in three dimensional flowers. The pull on bottom drawer is a miniature flower pot.

The top door pulls are miniature leaved. The box top has a brass finial centered with a double happiness symbol surrounded by stylized bats.

The handle on the box top is in the form of a stylized bat. The drawers are lined and padded. The blue lining material is decorated in silver house, temple and outdoor foliage scenes.

This would have been a wedding present wishing happiness and good luck to the couple. As I have said before it would have been one of the finest quality and most expensive wood jewelry box available. In terms of condition this is the best condition wood jewelry box I have ever seen. It appears to have never been used and shows no wear even on the lining material.

It is missing the lock for the two top doors which in no way takes away from its value. It does show its age with oxidized wood and brass but the box would not be old if these materials had not oxidized. I seriously considered adding this piece to my collection but it was a matter of space and not artistic quality and rarity. Hard to believe that this jewelry box is 120 years old. Please study the photographs and blow them up to inspect the piece, they are part of the description.

This is a notable piece that could easily be in a museum as an example of high end Chinese late Qing art.
